THESE ARE THE RULES FOR WRITING AND SUBMITTING STORIES

FOR RUSSELL COUNTY, ALABAMA MILLENNIUM HERITAGE BOOK
DEADLINE DATE: AUGUST 31, 2000

1. ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT:
Anyone who lives in Russell County or whose family or
ancestors ever lived here, even for a little while or interested in writing
about the history of Russell County or some famous person in the history of
Russell County or the history your business or church or any historical place
in Russell County. You never know, someone researching your line may see
your article and contact you with tons of information and pictures. You can
cross-reference an article. For instance if you have a Civil War era
ancestor and a letter he wrote about his experiences, put his family history
in a "Family" article, and within that article, reference his Civil War Era
experiences and you can put this into our "Topical" article section. There
are two sections: Family and Topical.

2 . HOW MUCH INFORMATION TO SUBMIT:
A 1000 words for free if the person or family was in
Russell County before 1890 and two photos published for free. If you can't
cover the information for your article in 1000 words, break the story in 2
parts and write: example: about pioneer settler John Smith and wife and John
Smith, Jr., siblings in one story of 1000 words and John Smith II and
descendants as another story of 1000 words. If the person or family was not
in Russell County until after 1890, you may submit 500 words and 1 photo for
free.

3. HOW MANY STORIES:
You may write about all of your and all of your spouse's
different ancestral families, your Jones side, Smith side, Black side, etc.
Theoretically, one person is supposed to submit only one story, but in
reality one person is submitting many stories but sometimes in the names of
other family members as brother or sister, aunt or uncle, mother or father,
etc. Some are submitting them in names of minor children. At end of story
list the name of the submitter and then list Written by and your names. If
You have more than one story to share about your family.

4. INFORMATION TO WRITE IN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY:
This is up to the writer. Most of us are emphasizing
genealogy, but to some that is "as boring as all the begets in the Bible,"
and if the writer prefers to write non-genealogical family stories which have
been told to him/her, that is perfectly OK. It's not necessary to write
about ancestors at all. The writer can tell abouthinself/herself and spouse
and children, childhood, school, church, jobs, etc. Write for the future,
what you would like your grandchildren and great-grandchildren to read.
"Professional" writing ability is not a requirement. These are grassroots
histories and the fact that they are written by real people actually enhances
their value. RESTRICTIONS: Articles cannot harm or embarrass anyone.
Committee reserves the right to delete spurious material.

5. THE STORY AND PHOTO INSTRUCTIONS:
The publisher requests that all material be TYPED
DOUBLE-SPACED. At the end of the story should be the WORD COUNT, SUBMITTED
BY: name and address of person submitting the story, WRITTEN BY: name and
address of person writing the story, SOURCES: sources of information, etc.,
CAPTION FOR PHOTO: LIMITED TO TEN WORDS to go under the photo.
EXAMPLE:
WORD COUNT: 995
SUBMITTED BY: Name and address
WRITTEN BY : Name and address
SOURCES: Census, Bible, court, land and deed records, marriage
and death and cemetery records, etc.
CAPTION FOR PHOTO: John and Mary Jones, 1889
Photos may be any size up to 8x10 but will be reduced in
size to go in the book. DON'T SEND ORIGINAL PHOTOS. Make a copy at your
local Super Walmart or somewhere. (Walmart has new machine that copies on the
spot for $6.49.) Photos will be returned if the submitter sends a stamped,
self-addressed envelope. Place your address label on the back of the picture,
also.

6. SUBMISSION OF OTHER INFORMATION:
You may submit separately for a different part of the
book, copies of old documents such as a letter written by a Confederate
soldier or a letter within by Aunt Elsie who moved to Texas to a family
member in Russell Co. or vice-versa. The book will have stories about old
and current: homes, churches, schools, clubs, communities, organizations,
railed station, landmarks, jobs, holiday and/or family traditions, special
memories. Anything you think future generations might want to know about
Russell County. If you have any sort of old document or interesting history,
please submit it.

You do not lose any copyright rights to your original
material. So, if you choose to publish later and use the same material, that
is not a problem.

DATES MAY BE WRITTEN: John Smith (10/15/1811-04/06/1882)
instead of counting as eight words if you wrote born and died. This counts
as one word. Any date can be written like: 10/15/1811 and this counts as one
word.

7. MAIL STORIES TO:
Mail your stories and or payment if ordering a book to
RUSSELL COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK COMMITTEE, P. O. BOX 1015, PHENIX CITY, AL
36869.

8. COST:
There is no cost to submit any family history unless you
go over the limit on words. If you go over much, it is supposed to cost 15
cents per word.

All counties in Alabama are producing HERITAGE BOOKS.
RUSSELL COUNTY will be Volume number 57. There will be 68 Volumes when the
set is completed. This committee is donating a complete set to the new
Phenix City Library. We have about 30 copies of the completed Volumes on the
shelf of the library now. Drop by if in town and take a look at them. You
might find some of your ancestors in other counties, also.

The prepublication cost of the RUSSELL COUNTY BOOK IS
$59.00. This includes $4.00 tax and $5.00 shipping and handling. If you want
to buy it at that price you should do so before August 31, 2000. (The price
has increases in most counties after publication date.) Payment for a copy
of the book may be made by Check, money order, MasterCard, or Visa. An order
form is included in the Russell Co. Heritage book Brochure which is mailed to
everyone requesting it. This is our final deadline for submitting stories.
Most counties required more than one deadline, and Russell County is no
exception. Jefferson County has had three different deadlines.

9. CHECK OUT THIS SITE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION;
This is the Heritage Publishing Co.'s web site.
http://heritagepublishing.net You may e-mail
Heritage Publishing at or you may e-mail me at
for further information. If you want a Russell Co.
Heritage book brochure mailed to you, you should send me your mailing
address.

10. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE: There have been a number of
instances when someone called or mailed in their article(s) to other counties
just after the book contents have gone off to the publisher. They were
disappointed and we are all poorer for not having that valuable family
history, business, school, church, etc. This is your chance to have your
family recorded in a book that will be located in most of the libraries in
the United States.

sands of time." The Psalm of Life by: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
