Dear Robin,
Thank you for taking the time to share this information with the ALRUSSELL
list.
Upon reading the following article, I followed up on Carey THORNTON of
Columbus, Georgia to try to learn who his parents were. While researching, I
came across the following and thought that it might be of interest to you as
well.
If you learn who Carey's parents were, would you please share it with me?
Hope that this is of great help to you!
Eugenia

RE: It then became the home of Mrs. Louisiana (Lou) Thornton, a relative of
the Pitts. Mrs. Thornton was the daughter of Mr. Elisha Calhoun
(02/02/1804-09/15/1879) and Sarah A. Lester (04/21/1820-12/24/1858).
She married second to Carey Thornton of Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Thornton was
a gambler. He spent his wife's money betting on horse races.

Elisha Calhoun b. Feb 2, 1804 Ga

Looking for any information about Elisha. I know that he married Sarah A
Lester in Jones Co Ga Dec 1834. They moved to Russell Co Al. I believe his
father was John b, 1775 SC , first cousin to John Caldwell Calhoun. Siblings
possibly Robert b. 1801, Patrick b. 1805, Euphemia who married Ralph Owens
Howard, and Ezekiel. Elisha and Sarah's children were; Andrew Jackson,
Louisiana, Samuel M, John Caldwell, Floride or Florida, Ella S and Julia.
Elisha and Sarah are buried in the Howard Family Cemetary on the Hiagee
Plantation in Russell County, Alabama.
The Calhouns, as most families of that time, seemed to use the same names
over and over again and I am trying to figure out Elisha's connection. My
family traditon says he was a cousin to the South Carolina statesman.

And whereas the said Sheriff did afterwards on the Twenty-First day of
December,
Eighteen Hundred and Seventy-Two, return the said writ with his return
therein endorsed,
in writing, in words and figures following,
TO WIT:
In pursuance of the said writ to me directed; I, this day summoned D.
B. Mitchell, E.
Calhoun, Eli Stringer, and S. C. Lindsey, being four freeholders who are not
connected to
the parties named in said writ by affinity, to allot and set off the dower
as therein specified,
and before they proceeded to assign said dower, I administered an oath to
each of them,
impartially, and to the best of their skill and ability, to assign the said
dower pursuant to
the decree referred to in this writ.
Witness by my hand, this Twenty-First day of December, Eighteen Hundred
and
Seventy- Two.
J.
S. Bunch, Sheriff of Russell County

Have you seen the 4 volume set of OUR CALHOUN FAMILY by Orval O. Calhoun?
Your Elisha is on pages 119 & 120 of Volume 1. There are also other
generations back. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this material but it
may give you a new lead. Good luck!
