Ewald,
Would you have any idea about the name(s) that DNR (Eck) represent? Charles
Eck wrote on those Civil War pension papers that DNR Eck was his father's
name. He listed his mother as Barbara Link from near Berlin.

Yes, the name ECK is present in Alsace (in Haut-Rhin and mostly in Bas-Rhin)
It is also present in Lorraine (mostly in Moselle)

Ewald,
Thank you for the information about the towns.
So I guess Markirch is the only one that applies to this list. I found that
name in scant notes my mother left. I'm not sure which of the family are
from there. I thought it might be Charles (Carl or Karl) Eck but he wrote
on his Civil War pension application that he was from Bamberg.
Could the name Eck be from Alsace?

Jeanne,
Altschweier (ZIP 77815, Germany) is part of Bühl, in county of Rastatt,
Bezirk Karlsruhe, Land of Baden-Württemberg
Bamberg (ZIP 69980, Germany) county of Bamberg, Bezirk of Oberfranken, Land
of Bayern/Bavaria
There is no Markirch in Germany, but it is the German name of
Sainte-Marie-Aux-Mines in Haut-Rhin (Alsace), arrondissement of Ribeauvillé.
Ewald
