Rose,
Could this be him below. It is from the 1850 Sumter Census, pg. 302B, transcription by Cheryl White.
5 699 711 Lewis Thomas E. 34 M . Blacksmith 1,500 NC
6 699 711 Lewis Elizabeth 27 F . . . NC
7 699 712 Lewis Allen G. 28 M . Farmer . NC
8 699 712 Wilkinson Sarah 39 F . . . NC
9 699 712 Wilkinson Jane E. 21 F . . . NC
10 699 712 Wilkinson John A. 16 M . Farmer . AL
11 699 713 Harrell Mariah 27 F . . 800 NC
12 699 713 Harrell Mary A. 6 F . . . AL
13 699 713 Harrell Martha J. 2 F . . . AL
14 699 713 Leard William 22 M . Blacksmith . GA
The next family is my g'x'sgrandmother Mary P. Johnson and family. I feel sure that she was a LEWIS before she married (Marengo Co., AL) Peter W. Johnson, who is not listed with them. The family(ies) above have interested me because they are Lewis', 2 missing husbands, and the names come up later. Mary has a daughter named Marriah also. Were the men folk gone off some place for work? Not back from Mexican War? Any feed back appreciated.
Hope this is your John. (The initial may be a transcription error.)
