For those people who seem to hate Broderbund with a passion, who do not like
Family Tree Maker, who think the price for Broderbund CDs are way too high,
and those who resent sending their family information to Broderbund and having
Broderbund charging for issuing a CD containing that information, I have the
solution.

Do NOT buy Family Tree Maker, do NOT buy Broderbund CDs and do NOT send your
family information to Broderbund. That way, you will have your revenge!

It is true you will not receive any information about your family tree from
other CDs and, after you die, your hard-gained genealogical information will
probably end up in your executor's waste basket, but then, you will have had
your revenge.

Now that you have your solution, please stop the whining postings. If I hear
from the venomous tongue of D.S. one more time, I'll barf.

Personally, I find that the odds dramatically increase if one
posts queries to the (in my case) local County Web Sites of the State
involved... At any rate, this works for me!

Howdy.
My Holtz family came to the US in Nov 1881. To my surprise I discovered
that they also brought their cousins, named Ehlerts. All came from the
Tribsees area of Prussia.
Any one an Ehlerts out there?

For anyone interested in learning how our ancestors gained freedom
going
thru Ellis Island I suggest you watch/tape this 3 part series. It will
start airing on Mon Sept 1st, 2nd & 3rd at 8:00am to 9:00am all 3
days.
I've seen it before (all in one show) while surfing the channels. I
wish I
had known it was so long, I would have taped it. Whoever did the
research
for this program did a hell of a GREAT job. Lots of interviews with
Folks
who told what it was like to go thru all the steps to freedom. It's a
MUST
SEE!!!
Hope you get this in time.......

I've recently begun researching my family and I've already run into a
stumbling block. My grandfather died in 1936, in London, Ohio, and I've
not had much luck in tracing back any further.

My father's birth certificate states that my grandfather was from South
Carolina. My grandfather's death certificate states that he was from North
Carolina. The 1920 census shows that he was from Ohio! I don't think that
the census information is accurate as it disagrees with information from my
family and the other documents.

I don't know where to go from here, any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Would like information on Swanson families. My grandfather, born in
1863, was the son of Johanna Sofia Hast and Johnas T. Swanson. Johnas
was born in Smaland, Narrkiping (near Bishop Hill) Sweden - or - in Asko
Soken, Sweden.

We would like to find more information prior to 1835. Can you help?

Thanks,
Maxine and Del Webb

Family Tree Maker automatically inserts them without prompting. You
can change them, of course, if you want to.

It also automatically guesses places from the first characters you
enter, another feature someone mentioned from another program.

Other than a circular diagram (which I'd love to see just to see what
it is), I haven't seen anyone mention specific features of other
programs that FTM doesn't offer. I would be interested - I'm not in
the least averse to using more than one program. if there's a reason.

I've found a couple of relatives, and a few possible relatives (the
ties to them are so far back in time we don't really know) through
direct Internet contacts.

But more useful for me have been information sources contacted through
the Net, which in turn led to relatives. For instance, contacting a
person also researching in New Brunswick led ultimately to snail mail
contact with two living relatives. They're not on the Net themselves,
but the contacts would never have been made, in all likelihood,
without the Net.

Plus, of course, the Net makes contact so much quicker and easier even
with relatives you knew about all along.

Within the last few minutes I got the soc.genealogy surnames with 99
listed. Have you added it to your newsgroup listing. Recently my
server lost all my list and I had to make it over

That makes at least two of us. There are probably at least hundreds
of thousands of people now dabbling in genealogy that would never have
taken the first step in that direction had it not been for FTM. I'm
one of 'em! The program is so easy to use that the software
practically runs itself. Once the information is entered it is so
easily accessable that anyone who ever sat in front of a computer
could do it! I have some family members that are using other software
to do their genealogy in ... I wouldn't trade the box my FTM came in
for both of their programs combined!

As far as the World Family Tree project is concerned ... that's a
decision that everyone will have to make for themselves. Whether to
buy or not to buy any or all of the CDs and whether or not to
contribute any data to the project. No one is holding a gun to
anyone's head and forceing them to buy or to contribute data. I have
an opportunity to take a look at some of the CDs and I'm sure gonna
take advantage of the opportunity ... then I'll decide if the purchase
price is worth it to _me_. I'm the only one that can make that
decision for me and if I decide to purchase and someone wants to
consider me a sucker for doing so .... ;o) ;o) ;o) ... hell, I
may buy two or three of 'em!
