from others. How about if you got to meet others that were researching
the same family as you are. Why don't you go to:

Can I just read a gedcom file in FTM ver 3.01? I just want to DL a gedcom
file from AOL and read the file. Is this possible in FTM? I don't necessarily
want to incorporate the file into my database.

Hi Diana!
Which Holmes line are you following? I may be able to give you a head
start, as I have a Holmes line from New England, which goes back to the
1600s. Let me know.

In fact after wanting one for years and finally getting one, I find that
the risk of typos overpowers the need for speed -- I'm a fast typist but
mistakes do happen. Therefore I'm back to notebooks and photocopies.
But the laptop comes into its own when back at the motel, when getting
it all together so that the next day's work is more productive.

Mary

Hi Peg. My vote goes to The Master Genealogist, now out in version 3.0
for windows, which is capable of doing a lot more than I ask of it.
Also the support group is fantastic, they have a mailing list digest and
I've learned more reading that than I have with the very good manual.
The method of adding people is excellent, and the reports that come out
amaze me -- after all these years of laboriously typing them out myself.
One really good feature is that it expects you to cite sources from the
beginning, which for beginners is the best of habits.
Regards,
Mary

Be happy to. There are two versions, L and D; L is where you get all
the individual emails separately, D is the Digest form which combines
all of them at a given cut-off, I think by how big the file has become.

Genealogy Ireland is : for the digest,
for individual
emails.

Genealogy Britain is : for the digest,
for individual
emails.

Scotch-Irish is :

which mainly covers queries in the USA.

Put nothing at all in the subject, and the body of the email must
contain ONLY the word
subscribe

with no signature or anything else added. You will receive a reply with
the various protocols, which shows that you are subscribed. To take
yourself off the list it is just the same, only using the word
unsubscribe

I have enjoyed all of them.
Regards,
Mary
