Subject: missing marriage records NY/NJ 1914-1916
Date: Thu, 02 Apr 1998 22:25:01 -0600
HI-
Having a devil of a time finding these records. Can
anyone help? A Roman Catholic couple, both born in Ireland,
emmigrated in different years to the same area, met and married.
The husband died after a few years, and no records were kept.
Names: John Joseph Delaney, born near Moyne, Thurles, Tipperary
in 1891. Arrived NY harbor September, 1913, to 324 East 33rd, NYC
in 1913 (uncle's home). In 1914 he was still living there, working
as a railroad guard. In 1917 was working in Montclair, NY as
a chaffeur, according to the 1920 census. Petition for Naturalization
says he was in NJ since March 25, 1917.
~~~married~~~
Mary Doherty, born 1893, in Limerick City, Ireland. 1920 census
indicates she emmigrated in 1914 or 1916 (blurred). Was also working
in Montclair in the same household (315 Upper Mntn Ave) as a servant
since 1917. Her whereabouts are assumed to be in New York City from
her arrival until 1917, but there's no proof of that.
I have had the NYC archives search for a marriage license for 1915-17
all boroughs, no record. I had New Jersey (Trenton) search for 1916-17
with no record found.
First son was born July 3, 1918, same household. Second
child, a daughter, was born 1919. The family was Roman Catholic, but
the local churches have no record of them. The archdiocese/Newark
is not responding to requests for information (sent in late Fall of
last year, and again in February, and with a followup phone call
in March).
Any suggestions as to where else to try for a record of marriage?
There is no useful info on John Delaney's naturalization certificate
(issued 1920). There is no info in the cemetary in which he is
buried.
I need the marriage certificate for an Irish citizenship attempt.
It's the very last document. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
