I'm not too much of an expert, but what I'd do is
contact the county courthouse in SC where he died
to get a death record. Some of these death
records, besides giving you dates will give
perhaps marriage dates and list survivors and
cause of death. I used to work in a branch archive
in WI here and we had local papers from the 19th
century that would have obituaries and marriage
and birth announcements. So if you can pin down a
place, check for newpapers from the time. We were
lucky to have these vital statistics indexed for
all the local papers. Check with a historical
society or state of SC Archives
