There are at least five different sites where you can check the SSDI and
they are not always identical. Theoretically, I suppose they should be,
but when checking a relative's death, I find some of them have
misinterpreted the ZIP for his place of death, some don't. For his name
there are 6 listings in some, 5 listings in other SSDIs. And I have found
persons on one who were not in the others.
Before you give up on SSDI, also be sure you have checked under variants,
such as first initial only, truncated names (where the site allows
you--that is one of the differences from site to site), soundex, under the
"middle" name, which may have been the legal first name, under last name
plus state only, etc.--all kinds of variations.
The 5 sites I am referring to are:
http://www.ancestry.com/ssdi/advanced.htm
http://emh.everton.com/ssmdi.html
http://www.familytreemaker.com/fto_ssdisearch.html
http://www.kindredkonnections.com/cgi-bin/ssdi?-1+0+English
http://www.familyinfo.com/index.asp?rf+SSDI.asp
There is also a pay site for tough cases at Cambridge Statistical Research
Associates (CSRA), I believe, which I do not have the URL for. It is
located in Irvine, CA.
