Subject: Genealogy on 'Star Trek: Voyager'

Genealogy is even being featured in the Star Trek universe!

The most recent episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" -- titled "11:59"
-- featured Captain Kathryn Janeway reminiscing about an ancestor
named Shannon O'Donnell Janeway who lived 15 generations ago.

This ancestor, according to family legend, helped to bring about
a self-contained ecosystem called the Millennium Gate (literally
at the turn of the 21st century), was supposedly involved in the
exploration of Mars in later years, and other adventures.

Shannon O'Donnell Janeway was, we learn, Kathryn Janeway's
inspiration to join Starfleet and become an explorer and starship
captain. However, frustrated by the lack of a family history,
she has no choice but to embark on a good old-fashioned ancestor
search through "birth certificates, death certificates, marriage
licenses, tax records, old newspapers," etc. (which, apparently,
all happen to be stored in the ship's computer banks!).

In the end, Janeway discovers that the stories have become rather
exaggerated over the centuries -- but still, she gets to know
Shannon the person, even if she isn't Shannon the legend. She
even discovers a family photo of Shannon with her family and
grandchildren.

N.B. The plot disappointed a lot of devoted Trekkers, but as an
homage to genealogy, it was very well done.

'Star Trek: Voyager' is syndicated on UPN, and is repeated in
most areas over the weekend; check your listings.
