My g-grandparents had 2 boys, 1 girl. One of the boys had a boy and a
girl. Both have died without children. The other boy, my grandfather,
had 2 boys and a girl. One of the boys, my uncle, had a son who was
killed in Vietnam and had no children. I have been unable to locate his
sister, my cousin. The other boy, my father, had 2 girls and 1 boy. My
brother has four girls, no boys. The family name on this branch
(Burton) would be dead with this generation if it were not for my son,
who decided he liked my maiden name better than his father's name. When
he turned 18 he hotfooted it down to the courthouse and in a very
simple procedure legally changed his name to Burton.
He carries all the DNA--now he has the name, too. I'm certain the name
Burton won't die out anytime soon; there are too many of them. Makes it
harder to trace, but there's the challenge.

current generation. In my generation there were 4 males - one died
unmarried, no offspring, one has only female offspring, and the other
two each had one son and one daughter. One of those sons died within a
month of High School graduation - no offspring. The other is married
but his wife has children from a previous marriage and there are no
more on the horizon.
