Since we now know a bit more about how we inherit traits, i.e., DNA,
etc., we know that certain chromosomes transmit only male to male,
others only female to female. So while the son taking his mother's
maiden name as a surname will continue that name for record purposes,
for physical inheritance it will not change the fact that the Y
chromosome for that line has ended, unless it is being carried by a
collateral male relative.
