Dear All, Jerry Smith alluded to the Japanese record keeping system
which is called "koseki". Family records are kept in each town where
your Japanese ancestors resided. These records are private. Family
members having the exact name as the name they are researching can
usually find records dating into the 1600's. Females having married
out of the family forfeit the right to examine their own lineage but are
allowed to examine their husband's lineage. Females wanting to research
a family name that they do not now legally have out of necessity will
have to find a family member in Japan willing to assist, who also has
the exact surname today. No exceptions are made. It can be difficult
to jump through the hoops, but you have no choice. They make the rules.
God bless.
