For Canada East read Quebec, also called Lower Canada. Lot's of Irish & Scots went
there.

With difficulty. I've have often had to rely on census records for ages. The
nominal censuses start in 1851 and continue for 1861, 1871 etc. by county.

The World GenWeb project http://www.worldgenweb.org/index.html will lead you to
Canada and then to the provinces. You will find messsage boards included among the
resources. Although the title is somewhat misleading in this sense,
soc.genealogy.french covers Quebec extensively and doesn't limit itself to only
Francophone surnames.

Try those for starters. Also check Cyndi's List http://www.CyndisList.com/ if you
haven't already. Good luck.
