Ok - fair enough. In his Deutsches Namenlexicon, Hans Von Bahlow claims that
the surname originated in Baden. There is also strong evidence for Westfalen,
both in the style of the name, it's current frequency, and as a place name.
My own branch came from what was western Hungary at the time of their
immigration and records aren't available to trace them back much further than
about 1793. They could have been Donauschwaben, but they didn't have a typical
Donauschwaben destination so there is probably a different explanation. But
that's only one of my lines.
