First of all this is a very interesting discussion for me.
This is my first discussion in this group and I have to learn to give more
information about the old facts (sorry Bob) and I have to be more tactfull
with my dutch humor.
I have not one document but I have more.
Also a document about the marriage of his father who was at that time a
french soldier and
he used the french version of the name: de borrai. Later he became sailor.
Another point was that their changed their religion in those days and they
became
"christians". Later during the centuries they married again jewish women.
The transactiondocuments of that jacob before he became a member of the
citycouncil
gives the name borray and after that the documents give the name borra.
In those days the city had 5000 people (Utrecht) and it was one small
family, no mistakes about the person.
Their profession from father to son was for many times a combination of
sailor and soldier.
My information stops at 1609 and before that I cannot find anything.
I only have the indication that they were sailors and I think you are right
about the writing stuff but
they used the name borray or de borrai.
