It is not an obsession, but a statement of my belief. You have said that it
was a small town and it was known who was who. As Bob Heiling and I have
both commented, one does not automatically become acceptable by changing the
spelling of one's name - as Bob put it, "changing the name does not change
the man." Without additional facts, your thesis that he changed his name so
he could be a city councilman is untenable.

I am not that familiar with the development of surnames on the European
continent, but this might be a fruitful area of research for you.
