I've got a link on my genealogy homepage to a page where a gentleman
describes how to make one at home, very simply. It's listed under
the category "just plain useful and cool" and includes not only the
slide scanner, but a tutorial on using all the color-balancing features,
what the various terms in image manipulation software mean, and so on.
