The muster roll for this company is located at
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/wilcox/military/wilcoxfarmer.txt
It shows no Smith in the ranks. However I checked the National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) at
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
for James C. Smith and found five in the following CSA Infantry Regiments:
9th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
10th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
19th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
38th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
57th Regiment, Alabama Infantry

The one in the 38th was in Company A. The muster roll for that company is at http://www.mindspring.com/~mccabe/38thAla/38thAlaA.htm
It shows J.C. Smith joined in Clarke County at the age of 33. The muster roll date and location is given as June 12, 1862 at Camp Holt near Mobile, Alabama. For Smith's full military record, go to your local public library's genealogy department and look on microfilm M374 roll 41.
