Hi,
If any of you have ancestors from Menifee or adjacent counties that are
Indian but you are still looking for their heritage....
I have a copy of a Bill that went to Congress in 1908 for the purpose of
naming the attached persons as Choctaw Indians. Each person listed on
the Bill is a descendant of John and Mary Harper, Choctaw Indians who
moved into the area just before 1800. I have read several depositions
given by the people on the list and all state that John Harper tried to
enroll under the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek but was refused by a
belligerent agent. I have also seen reference to this belligerent agent
and his failure to enroll eligible people in a couple of Choctaw history
books (sorry I can't remember the names off the top of my head).
Anyway, if you have ancestors from the Menifee area who have an oral
tradition of being Indian, I would be glad to look up their names for you
on the Bill.
Lisa
