John, I just want to publicly let you know that I followed your advice
and obtained several of the books you have recommended concerning Hessians
in America and have managed to find the time to read a couple of them, and
want to thank you for the suggestions.
One is, "The Diary of Lieutenant von Bardeleben" as translated by Bruce
E. Burgoyne. Of particular interest, to me, is the description of life in
the troop transport. I have speculated that one of the reasons "my" Hessian
deserted was he couldn't stomach the thought of another of those months-long
ocean voyages in the hull of a transport. Bardeleben's description supports
that, and he was an officer. Think what the privates' lives were like! His
description of what had to be done to drink the water, toward the end of the
trip, really gets to you.
The other book is, "The Hessians" by Edward J. Lowell. His description
of the political and geographic situation in Germany at the time of the
American Revolution is the best I have seen, and gave me many notes to add
to the biography of "my" Hessian.
Now, if you will just send me chunks of time to read the other books you
recommended, and which are stacked up alongside my desk . . .
Thanks for the recommendations - Jack Trickler
