Dear Laura,
when I do refer to using the mail list archives, and to look for a
specific subject, one uses the keyword archives and enters a
specific keyword like Tomb, or variations, in no time one knows
if this name appears anywhere. When trying to get a general feel
of the issues, one uses the 'Threaded Archives, and checks the
subject lines. Unfortunately, this particular archiv system stopped
working on Sep. 9, 2001, so it does not cover the more recent entries.
Rootsweb is been promising since to fix 'tha problem', but so far no luck.
I really don't want to discourage you with your search, and your story -
who knows what happened and who knows what is the truth, but
because it is assumed that he was from Northern Germany or even from
northely neighbours of Germany, and to assume that for that reason he
may have served with a Regiment coming from the northern part, is just
impossible to answer. Hessian soldiers came from all over Europe, serving
in all kinds of Hessian units. Many were volunteers, adventurers, and
other stable or unstable men, from all walks of life, some running away from
a bad situation in business or family, whatever. If he could walk and carry a
rifle, they would take him, not asking from what part of the country he came from.
This is why I answered to you that it would be impossible to answer
your question. It's a jigsaw puzzle, and you have to look for all the
pieces.
Have fun,
John

John,
I have been reading the list archives. I realize I have asked some
questions mainly because I would like to solve this. My moms great aunt
told me he was from the northern most part of Germany more Scandinavian. I
thought maybe it would be a question someone could answer. I'm afraid I
dont have much in the way of details. I did find a reference to George Tomb
that said he was a Militiaman and spy. The spy part fits with the family
stories and I guess the militiaman does fit as well since the story is that
he loved this country and decided to help the Americans to fight the
British. I keep asking questions because I figure there might be someone on
the list that might have information that will help me out. I enjoy the
list and I read every post. As for reading the archives that is taking time
there is alot of information to sort through. One of these days I will get
to work early and just start printing it out so I can read it at my leisure.
By next year I should be able to start buying more in the way of research
material so that should help in my quest. Your patience is appreciated. My
hope right now is that my cousin who has the family bible will get off his
duff and find it. He said I think it might be in the attic. I about died
thinking of it in his damp attic.
Thank you,
Laura
