Hello Helen,
I think you intended this message to go to the
Quebec-Hessians mail list, that is why I am now forwarding
it to the list. Your information is quite interesting, and I think
it would be a good idea if you could tell us more about this
German soldier Martin JONES.
We do have a Brunswick soldier named Martin JOHN, born about
1747/48 in Heiligenstadt, who was discharged in Canada in 1783.
But we also have a Martin JAHNS, a Brunswicker, born about
1737/38 in Belzig, Saxony. This one deserted on 15.Dec.1778 at
New Providence, PA, during the march from Winter Hill prison
camp near Boston to Virginia.
Now if I read your message correctly, your soldier baptised a
child in Albany, N.Y., do you have a date, a mother's name, and
a church? This would help. Also very important would be to
determine the correct age, perhaps from a gravestone or death
record.
Another interesting fact is the name you quoted for his wife,
Hanna BRANDT. A good ol' German name, perhaps he married
already in Germany, or married the widow, or daughter of another
Brunswick soldier. There were several Brunswickers named BRAND,
for instance one who also deserted during the same march from
Boston on 30.Nov.1778 near Fishkill, N.Y. I am mentioning this only
that this should not be overlooked.
I sincerely hope that someone will come up with more information
to help solve this puzzle. Every puzzle piece will help.
Cheers,
John Merz

Argenteuil Co. Que) a German who fought on the side of the British.
He ended up in St. Andrews area in Argenteuil Co. I think I have
found a christening of a child near Albany, NY after the war.

a thing he published way back in the 1970's that invites you to contact
him thru his publisher, but I can't seem to get thru.
