There is no reason why the genealogical side of history on the internet
should still fall so far short of the potential that already exists in other
historical portrayals.
The excellent US Merchant Marine website has ship, crew and
casualty databases and excellent links to additional information. It is
so remarkable, once again, to discover the ancient surnames we research
among the facts in these databases that refer to relatives of our own
generation and observe, again, the unending circles and cyles of community,
kinship and relationship. http://www.usmm.org/ >>

Dear Carolyn, cousins and listers:
I read Carolyln's post on the Merchant Marines. I had an Uncle in that Corp
that survived, came home to family, brothers/sister, and friends. He was a
midget race car driver and that is how he finally died, doing what he loved.
My sister found some letters from him to our mother (his only sister) and
made copies of them for me. I now plan to haunt my notebooks and refind
them, re read them. It is something I have thought of doing for some months
now but never got around to it you know how genealogy is, you kind of get
side tracked <G>. He's in included in the IN racing web site for the Mt.
Lawn Race Track one of the first Burton's in racing.
I remember my mother receiving letters from my Uncle Everett and saying that
she wished he could say where he was but just his comentary on sights he saw
told us he was traveling around the world and the time laps between his
mailing and our receiving victory mail, as it was called in those day. They
didn't need stamps either.
As always you gave URLs to sites. I have been in Navy sites for masted (I
love these ships) and steam, desel but don't remember the Merchant Marines
being mentioned or included.
If, as you says the Merchant Mariners are listed as to ships they sailed on
maybe I can find my Uncles ship or ships he sailed on. That would be so neat.
He has three sons still living and all have been in the 500 Indy class car,
painting, detailing, mechanicing on but as far as I know they have not driven
any races anywhere. Ronnie is the official 500 Winnning Car portrate painter
each yr and his paintings are in the Musium in Indianapolis. Larry worked
for some time as mechanic on Paul Nemans racing team he did this all from a
wheel chair he also built his own small airplane amd flew it. Dale did the
painting on the helments of the drivers and detaining the skins of their race
cars.
Of course they have done much in the race car game thru the yrs. The boys
are proud of their father that left them a legacy.
Sorry to get off the subject of Merchant Marines but I have known that they
were unsung heros of WWII. I thank you for the many links that will keep me
from other research presently but in a line with our family genealogy non the
less. One of my side tracking ventures ,,,,,,<G>.

Carolyn, I am so fortune to have found your list to join as it has been so
helpful to me in many, many ways. If I had to cut my list subscriptions down
this would be the very last list I would leave IF I HAD TO. I don't have to
so you are stuck with me.
Take care with the winter coming on and keep warm and well.
I read with interest each and every post to the list and enjoy everyone input
and we have a great bunch of list members at that.

I am one that has been kicked off a list also, so I guess I am in good
company here
I know of several persons that have been done so and they started their own
lists and are making successes of them. Some of these list owners are really
small minded persons. Thank you for being the open minded person you are
Carolyn.
I love you very much for all that you do for me and others on the list.

Beej
