I can sure see how stories get started. My grandmother always wanted to be
related to someone FAMOUS. I am still looking for the connection to
President U S Grant. According to my grandmother, her grandmother was a
first cousin to Ulyssis. Other than her grandmother's mother's last name
was Grant, I never found the connection. My dad's first cousin went to the
Grant Memorial and met a relative, they decided it had something to do
with a marriage later down the line. My grandmother also said, we were
related to Robert Lewis Stevenson, but it was "way back there". Most have
been before 1600 because the Stevensons were in America at that time. Most
the other stories did prove to be true.
Speaking of Jr not being the son of SR. I have proof of that in a Will
where my Rev War Vet John Renfro gave land to John Renfro, Jr son of his
deceased son Isaac. This deed was one of the documents that I used to join
the DAR. John the Rev War Vet did have a son named John, also, but it was
very clear in the document that this was THE John's grandson. (There were
plenty of grandsons named John.
My great Aunt became a Morman and she had researed the Leeper Family. When
her eyesight failed, she hired a researcer to check into information. This
researcher said the Elizabeth (Leeper) Renfro's father was Weston Leeper,
which was not correct. I found both Weston Leeper and his wife Sofia's
Will. It could have been assumed from Sofia's will that Elizabeth was
Weston's daughter, but not from his will where he states "my sister
Elizabeth Renfro". When I looked at the census and saw Weston's age, I
knew that he could not have been her father. Elizabeth died before Weston
and he did not have any children, so his estate went to his siblings and
their heirs.
