Capt. M'DANIEL DORRISS, Sir - Having understood from a respectable
source,
that you have stated that I had recanted from an understanding between
us,
respecting a race to be run by the "Sir Archie" and "Pioneer" horses, I
take
the liberty of reminding you, that on the same day you bantered Mr.
ANDERSON
to run for a bet of fifty dollars, (and he declined running for a sum of
that
amount, on account of the trouble of putting his horse in order) I told
you
most distinctly that I would take the bet upon myself, which you agreed
to,
in the presence of several witnesses. Now Sir, if you have any doubt
(as you
have probably stated) that I am not able to spare that sum, the money
shall
be placed in the hands of some responsible and disinterested man; and
you can
be accommodated at any time within two or three months before the race.
Under these circumstances, Sir, it will be expected that you will close
the
race.
