Subject: [ANDERSON-L] Freedmen files to be sent to your list- UPDATED
Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 19:52:27 EST
Hello Everyone,
I am about to submit to the list various census and Freedmen
Project
records. These records will only be for your particular surname list.
The Freedmen records submitted, will deal with info on former slaves and
their desendents.
These records will include the names of former slaves or their desendents who
were African Americans, Native Americans and Caucasian American , in Indian
Territory of OK.
These Freedmen came from many different states and areas and were driven into
Oklahoma Indian territory. If your ancesters lived in PA, OH, and northern
states east of the Mississippi, they could have ended up here. Please be sure
to visit the archives of your State-Freedmen-L, for the full rolls and census.
EXAMPLE: If you live in Kentucky, you would look in the KY-FREEDMEN-L
archives at rootsweb.com.
I currently have all states east of the Mississippi loaded with the files and
will be doing the states west of the Mississippi in about a week.
The Freedmen Project is an attempt to connect the families of former slaves
and their decendents to there Native American roots. We also hope someday in
the future to HONER those Freedmen Slaves in our HONORARIUMS.
My work here is with the Cherokee Freedmen slaves who were rejected and their
family information. Many were later admitted into the Dawes Rolls and some
were not. I will also in the future be submitting to your list any Cherokee
Freedmen Rejected application, that I may have on with your family surname on
it. I am always willing to help anyone with questions, but as you can
imagine, I am swamped with mail request. So please be patient with me.I am
also in the process of putting together a list, which will teach those of you
who are interested and do not know how to read these records.
Native Americans don't seem to have any problems reading them. They have
lived for years being identified as a # or by their blood quantum. Shame
isn't it? For many Caucasian and mixed families who are researching they
often don't understand what those #'s and blood quantum remarks mean. If you
don't know, please just ask.
These are after the Civil War period. Two of these files will include the
ROLL #'s for the Freedmen and the Freedmen Minors.
You may copy and use any portion that pertains to your family line, on your
sites.
I would like you to know that it is only because of Mr. Jim Hicks of the
, and Mr. Jerry Clark of Washington DC, and
Barbara Benge, that I am able to provide you with all this free geneology,
for the FREEDMEN. (FREE)
Anyone who would like to contact Mr. Jim Hicks, please feel free to do so.
