My ancestor came to England (Clerkenwell) in 1820 from Italy - 25 years
later he applied for naturalization as a British Subject under Queen
Victoria. We have the original paper which he signed from the Home Office
stating that he agreed to all the law of Great Britain and that he was now
classed as British. I am not sure whether he was sponsored for this as he
worked for the Bow Street Police but it cost quite a bit of money to apply
for naturalisation. Please anyone correct me if I am wrong!

The type of registration depends on the visa they entered with. My wife is
Finnish. She had to renew her registration periodically when she first came
here. When we married, she didn't become a British citizen, and never took
naturalization, but all restrictions were lifted. Now that Finland is in the
EU, she can, along with all EU citizens move and work freely throughout the
EU zone.
When my grandfather came here in 1905, he had to register yearly and had a
pass book. (I've got some very poor photocopies of photocopies of it) He
never took British naturalization either. My grandmother was born here from
Italian born parents. In my grandfather's pass book it says she was British
at birth, but her nationality became Italian when she married him.
So that looks like...Yes, Yes and Yes
