you didn't mention that 1837online is a paid service, so FreeBMD
(http://freebmd.org.uk) is still a preferred first stop. Also the indexing
facilities are still being upgraded at 1837online, so it will work out
cheaper to wait for a while, particularly for the earlier records, where you
may have to pay to look at several pages to find a more common name. Where
1837online does have the edge is if you're looking for 20th century records
- which FreeBMD doesn't cover. Peter Christian has an article about this
site coming up in the August edition of Ancestors.
