Hi Geoff
An afterthought. Other avenues to pursue are:
1. If naturalised, then the naturalization registers (National Archives).
2. If there are no GUTTULA in Italy at present, was he a protestant (Waldensian?) from e.g. Switzerland rather than Italy. Someone
on the list may know more about Waldensians??
3. There is one "Giuseppe LA GUTTULA" I found in familysearch.org (Ancestral file so not necessarily reliable). b 03 JAN 1856
Mezzojuso,Termini,Palermo, , Sicilia Region, Italy. Father was La GATTULA.
Sicily may be a possibility for your Giuseppe's origins.
My family has a rare surname, GHIRARDANI, but it still exists in Italy today (but not with some of the 17 or so inventive spellings
used in UK records since 1851). If I could not find a surname in the phone directory I would seriously question the spelling and
generate other possibilities.
NB GUTTULA as a word can be found searching with Google, especially in taxonomies. It seems there is an author from Hydrabad with
the surname GUTTULA! (Guttula Srinivasrao, search on www.archive.org/texts/)
Happy hunting!
