It's not unknown; with the Italians I'm related to, my 3x g grandfather,
born in Venice(?) in about 1775, used the name Joseph when he married in
London in 1799. (I don't know when he came here). I presume that he was
Giuseppe in Italy.
Gioani (sic) Batissta Pagliano was born in Piedmont in 1764, came to London
from Italy
in 1794 and was recorded as John in the marriage register in 1798 and in
rate books from that date although he used Gioani in other documents as late
as 1810.
Perhaps they used the anglicised version of names for official purposes
