I find it very interesting that there is a list of property handed in by
Italians between 23 and 31st. of May 1940 to the Southampton police. War
between Italy and Britain did not break out until June 10. Using Dr. Colpi's
book "The Italian Factor" as a reference, although I remember the occassion,
as I was11 years old when the police came to the door to take my Edinburgh
born father toSaughton Jail at dawn.
A list of 1,500 had been made up by MI5 and the plan was to immediately
intern this list when Italy declared war followed by the selective
internment of males between 17 and 60 years of age who had been resident in
Britain for ten years, later changed to 20 years. Even when Churchill said
"Collar the lot" weeks before the declaration of war there was no round up.
I cannot find any account of arrests being made until the "night of terror"
on June 10. I realise the people on this list were not arrested but please
Colin tell us what they handed in?
