Hi Sharon,
1p is one [new] penny, from the time we went decimal (1971?).
1d is the pre-decimal way of writing a penny. Stands for denarius (Latin for
a coin of a particular sort)
Each pound used to divide into 20 shillings, each shilling into 12
pennies/pence.
One pound, one shilling & one penny was written £1/1/1d, columns in ledgers
were arranged in L S D
One pound one shilling was either written £1/1/- or 1g (one guinea)
¼d was called a farthing, ie a fourth part of a penny
½d was called a halfpenny, pronounced [haypenny]

Maths was fun in the pre-decimal, pre-metric days - you got used to using
different bases, and it was far harder to mess up big-time - these days it
is all too easy, by inadvertantly moving a decimal point.

Hope this helps

Fiona
