Sugarplum many thanks for your email.
Digging on Ancestry.co.uk and IGI, I think you and I are distant cousins.
Ellen Poncia was the daughter of Anthony Poncia who was the son of John
Poncia baptised in 1813 at St Georges RC in Worcester. UK That John Poncia
was the son of John and Eliza Poncia.
My gg grandmother was Elizabeth Fletcher her mother was also an Eliza Poncia
who was the daughter of Peter Poncia, she too was baptised at St Georges RC
in Worcester in the early 19th Century. Peter Poncia from the 1851
Birmingham census was born in Como Lombardy. There is merchant and
ironmonger associated with all of them including the Tala brand I am
guessing that your ancestor John Poncia and my ancestor Peter Poncia both
from Lombardy winding up in Worcester are brothers. Digging around
ancestor.co.uk and IGI I have also come across a Daniel Poncia who has
Birmingham descendents.
There are both Poncia and Fletcher (probably the influence of my Eliza
Poncia) chapels in St Chads cathedral in Birmingham, the first Catholic
cathedral built in England after the reformation which was designed by
Pugin.
My mother, her cousin and I visited St Chads and were told by the priest
that Worcester had a large Italian community in the early 19th Century when
our respective ancestors were christened, from my notes he said that this
was due to Worcester being a major port on the River Severn and also to do
with the Hop industry?
I am copying this into the wonderful anglo Italian e-list for any thoughts
they may have. Thanks to that list I visited a great family history fair and
talked to the very interesting Kay Lorenzato from the group. Given the
merchant/hardware connection, she suggested that prior to coming to England
the Poncias could have been involved with the traditional Como clockmaking
trade. Como was also famous for mosaics and ceramics, again according to my
notes of my conversation with her and subsequent emails.
I am planning to go to the Worcester archives this year (oh the Worcester
Birmingham canal I suspect is the way they all got from Worcester to
Birmingham.)
Apart from your response I received another reply to my question from a
Poncia descendent in Australia who put me onto the 1851 census.
I hope that some of this has been useful and many good wishes for your
continuing research.
Kind regards
Clare
