The earliest census useful for genealogy is 1841. Then there was one every
10 years, and those for 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 are available
for research. Later ones are still under the 100-year closure rule.

There were earlier censuses in 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 but these record
only numbers, not names, so they are not much use for family tree research,
except for the extremely tiny minority of parishes where some details have
survived from one or other of these years. (Dallas in 1811 and Mortlach in
1821 are the only ones which spring to mind; neither is in Angus.)
