John,

Regarding your question about the naming Conventions Of The Scots:

Anne Burgess posted a very simple, but clear description on this forum some time ago. I kept it, and have copied it (below).

I hope it helps,

Yes they did

First son after father's father
Second son after mother's father
Third son after father
Subsequent sons after great-grandfathers, uncles, cousins, neighbours,
minister, doctor, schoolmaster, laird etc

First daughter after mother's mother
Second daughter after father's mother
Third daughter after mother
Subsequent daughters after great-grandparents, aunts, cousins, neighbours,
minister's wife, doctor's wife, schoolmaster's wife, laird's wife etc

> did they follow it seriously
Seriously enough for it to be useful on occasion to verify a relationaship.
For example I found a Grizel Leslie, born 1757. When I checked the parish
register, there were two, both born in the same parish in the same year (and
named after the minister' s housekeeper who was a witness at both baptisms).
However one was the daughter of William and the other tha daughter of Joseph
Leslie. They both grew up and married - and one had a second son named
William, but no Joseph and the other's second son was Joseph - and she had
no William. QED.

Well, sometimes Helen was used interchangeably with Ellen, and Nell could be
used for either of these, or for Eleanor, though that latter is very rare in
Scotland.

I have checked and noted all Glenday's from scotlands people. Moost
occurances of the name are around Dundee, Kirriemuir,Alyth,Cortachy (&
Clova),Airlie and Glamis probably 85%. This suggests that the Glenday's did
not travel to far within Scotland itself!

That's a good point! Hopefully his siblings did not travel to far otherwise
the proverbial needle and haystack comes to mind!

Regards

John
