Subject: More about AOL and the RootsWeb lists8 mail delivery problem
Date: Sat, 7 Aug 2004 12:58:33 EDT

The problem is very intermittent and doesn't appear to be a normal AOL
'blocking a server'
situation. AOL blocked lists8 for a time and there were some bounces
reflecting the block. Most list admins have reported that today they are no longer
getting any bounces.

Some list mail IS getting through from lists8 lists--somewhat consistently
for SOME lists8
lists. Other lists8 mail is NOT getting through and is apparently blocked,
still OTHER lists8 mail gets through but on a delayed basis.

Emma and I tried a little experiment with a lists8 list SHE admins and one
I
admin. I joined HER list and she joined MY list. We both are getting mail
from MY lists8 list and neither of us was getting mail from Emma's list.
However, my admin mail from my list is about 12 hours delayed before I
receive
it. <sigh>

This one may be harder to fix because it doesn't seem to be the normal
server blocking problem--it is intermittent and seems to be only SOME lists
affected. I can't explain it and so don't know exactly what to report to
AOL as
the problem but I'd advise everyone who is not getting SOME or ALL of their
lists8 list mail, or who has been removed from a list due to bouncing mail, to
report the problem to AOL's postmaster address: and
include details of exactly what is happening. Include the server name:
lists8.rootsweb.com and the IP address which is: 66.43.18.27 . Make sure you tell
AOL that this is NOT spam and is mail you WANT to receive. You might want to
mention that RootsWeb's list servers are supposed to be whitelisted but that
lists8 is a new server that might not be whitelisted as yet.
