Subject: [AOL-RW] Getting rid of old versions of AOL?
Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2009 09:59:14 EST
Hi, all,
Spring's nearly here, and it's housecleaning time!
It appears that I have several versions of AOL, and I don't know which, or
whether, I should get rid of. I am in dire need of more RAM but this is a
nearly five-year-old cheap computer and I hesitate to put any money in it, so
anything I can get rid of is bound to help the efficiency, and I know AOL is a
resource hog.
I am running 9.0 SE (and very happy with it!) with Windows XP. I can't
figure out how to determine which AOL version, if there were more. When I go to
AOL Help it shows I have 9.0 with no additional numbers or letters.
In Program Files I have
AOL 9(3).0 created 9/9/2006 2.2 KB; 1 file, no folders
AOL 9.0 " 10/23/2008 68.7 MB; 293 files, 23 folders
AOL 9.0a 10/27/2008 75.4 MB; 284 files, 23 folders
AOL 9.0b 11/4/2008 31.1 MB; 154 files, 16 folders
Also a separate folder that just says AOL; 8.94 MB; 36 files, 3 folders.
Most of the files are installers.
I addition, on my C drive (NOT under Program Files) I have folders
AOL 9.0 (same date and size as AOL 9.0 above),
AOL (8.71 MB, 8-24-2006),
AOL Companion (1.97 MB, 8-24-2006)
AOL Toolbar (8.59 KB, 8-24-2006)
At a glance, the files in 9.0 and 9.0a appear virtually identical. It looks
to me that there have been updates without getting rid of the old files, but
I'm not savvy enough to know what to do. Do I dare get rid of any of these,
and if so, which? I don't have a CD of 9.0 SE to restore from, so I need to
be careful.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
