I use Quicken to run the finances for the organizations where I serve as
Treasurer. That way, I have great reports each month and can project budgets
and stuff. None of the organizations where I serve are very big, though. I
sometimes use Quicken to do my own personal stuff and I love the way I can
track both credit cards and the check register.

My own genealogical research business has no inventory to track and, while I
work lots of cases, I do them for only two main clients, which makes
invoicing much easier. I have spreadsheet invoices set up that I open, save
to a new name, and fill in each month. For my Dames consulting, I use one
datafile for the overall case status report, about 30-40 cases each month,
and another spreadsheet for the invoice. I have to use one invoice to cover
the whole caseload plus office hours.

I'm all in favor of keeping records on my laptop, but I don't take the
laptop with me everywhere. For this reason, I like to use printed forms in
each casefile that I update as I go along. I find that trying to keep things
in my head is a bad idea as it's a little breezy in there.

Yours, Barbara
