Much of my research is done in Des Moines, IA at various large repositories.
I live about 25 miles west of Des Moines, and don't charge mileage for
that. This is primarily because I am going into Des Moines several times a
week to shop, etc. and while I may go purposeply to do research for clients,
on the way home I buy groceries, etc. Otherwise I charge mileage at .325
cents per mile. I realize that this sometimes adds up, but so does the wear
and tear on the car and feeding it gas. A friend of mine who is a
professional researcher in Omaha, charges from the moment she backs out of
the drive way for in-town or out-of-town research.
