While I'm new as an APG Trustee, I feel safe in answering that you are very
welcome to test ideas here. While we'd love to have you as an APG member (if
you're not already one), I know many would agree that helping others get
their business going is one of the rewards for having "Been There, Done
That, Got The T-Shirt" <grin>.
As for mentors, I feel that I have some very good ones, and continue to do
so. They are the lecturers at national and regional conferences, the authors
in the major publications, and the chance (usually at national conferences)
to socialize with people much more experienced than I.
Another behavior that would be helpful is humility. I'm weak when it come to
this behavior <grin again>, but it involves being willing to ask questions.
On this list, you can ask away and I encourage you to do so. We all need to
keep in mind that the most experienced professional genealogist is a
beginner again every time s/he researches a new locale, a new ethnic group,
or a new time period. Over time, you'll see such basic questions on this
list, on USGENWEB county lists, and elsewhere.
If, however, you were asking if APG as an organization, assigns mentors, I'm
not aware that we do. There may be some merit in the idea, but I wonder who
would have time to manage such a program. I know I wouldn't. The concept is
intriguing though.
You didn't mention your location, but if you do, you may find that there is
an APG Chapter near you, or at least member of APG who can discuss local
resources and skills to help.
Sincerely,
John Wylie
