There can be other factors involved also. During the months of my mother's
final illness when I was flying back and forth between Oklahoma and Seattle
to look after her, my mail piled up, including one from an irate
professional who took it upon herself to send me a $15 check along with a
request to look up some records in my home county.
She did not bother to inquire first whether I could/would accept the
commission or what my rates were. The $15 would not have begun to cover the
work.
I finally got back to her, but not timely enough evidently, as she called me
and accused me of "unprofessional conduct" even though I explained I had
just lost my mother and why I had not replied sooner.
Needless to say I returned her $15 check, her letter, and put a little black
mark by her name in the directory.
I don't know how other professionals handle this, but I prefer to be
conducted first to see if I can or will accept a particular commission.
