I use Generations primarily because of how the box charts are created. Each
"couple" is placed inside one box, rather than two boxes connected with a
line as all other programs. I often prepare descendancy charts for attorneys
and they "understand" the one box per couple MUCH better and is why I use
the program. I can also edit each box and add social security numbers,
current address, relationship to decedent, and even color the boxes of
living persons to distinquish them from deceased persons.
But I've also been frustrated with Generations from even the early days when
it was called Reunion. When you create a register report (they don't even
allow a modified register report) and export it to WordPerfect, the tabs do
not transfer correctly and it is a real mess. I've complained and complained
and offered solutions, but no one listens at Generations. They just blame
WordPerfect.
So... I'm leaving Generations!! This summer I evaluated TMG and UFT and
decided upon Ultimate Family Tree. I had three reasons: 1) the reports are
more attractive and use correct grammar; 2) the search capabilties of
sorting and analyzing every type of data is unsurpassed by any other
program; and 3) I've visited the booths at national conferences to discuss
the two programs and the reception and interest in my needs or concerns are
always respected and listened to at the UFT booth; not at TMG.
I will still probably GEDCOM data from UFT into Generations to make the
descendancy box charts when needed. But who knows? Perhaps UFT will one day
create an option in their program because they listened to me and others. At
least I have hope.
