Here's some good news/bad news from London:
Good News: I just discovered another place in London for research, the
London Metropolitan Archives. Said archives are a short walk from the new
Family Records Centre and hold many wonderful things.
For instance, London Post Office Directories from the 1800's (not sure of
start date) up into this century (at least the 1920's). These are rather
like U.S. city directories but extremely large (5 rolls of film/year).
There is an almanac of movable feasts/religious days up front, sometimes a
current map of London and then the court listings start. After that come
street listings, so with an address from a birth/marriage/death
certificate, you can see what business is there and who is up and down the
road. Then alphabetical trade listings and professionals listed in yellow
page style.
They also have many parish registers (both on film and originals) from the
Metro London area (read formerly co. Middlesex ). This does not include
those in London proper or in the City of Westminster.
The staff is friendly and helpful. Hours are MWF 9:30-4:45 & TTh
9:30-7:30.

Bad news: While in London, my husband dialed in twice over the phone lines
to what he had been told was a local number to check his e-mail. At the
end of our stay, we were handed the phone bill of over 100 pounds. The
dial-ups had been charged at a rate 10 times that of a call to
Northumberland! We also discovered that the hotel blocked all access to
800 numbers over the room phones. Beware!
