I think one thing is being missed here.
Most societies do many hours of volunteer work to put together a
publication. They use the revenue from that book to bankroll their next
endeavor. The genealogical society was out there for many years copying
and preserving the records.
Most societies will protect their publications since it is their livelihood!
The free Internet has cause many new wrinkles for the world of competition
and non profits.
