Subject: [APG] Mariner, ship & voyage resources

Hello,
The Memorial University of Newfoundland has published a Cd of mariner, ship,
shipowners, voyage, ports and managing owners containing over 500,000 records
and almost 64,000 unique surnames from all over the world.
There is a great misunderstanding about the coverage of this CD. Many people
are under the impression that it is limited to Newfoundland or Atlantic
Province mariners simply because of the brief description in the CD title. In
fact, the Atlantic Province ports were a critical hub in the world trade
patterns for the 1787-1936 time period covered by the CD.
The Atlantic Province ports crewmember database lists 67 different countries
or geographic regions of birth for the mariners on these voyages. The number
of regions or countries mentioned in all databases on the CD is about twice
that number. Exact location detail varies, but multiple records often provide
corroborating clues.
The purpose of the database creation was a study of Canadian port shipping
patterns. Many types of records were combined. The databases with the "RS"
suffix are samples from other British port voyages used to calculate
statistical patterns. The general contents may be described as follows:
Database/Number of Records
Crews 182,661
CrewsRS 85,694
Masters 20,690
MasterRS 19,392
Voyages 18,590
VoyagesRS 18,811
Ports 33,075
PortsRS 55,002
Owner 79,681
VesReg 44,685
Total Records 558,281
I cannot do specific lookups on the Cd now, but did several months worth while
we werecompiling the statistics. I urge researchers who have mariner interests
to look at the statistics we have compiled. Several different statistical
views and topics with contents examples are contained in the following
article.
A Genealogical Goldmine: http://bostonstates.rootsweb.com/S&SCdstats.htm
This CD is a world-wide migration resource.
Location, Location, Location ...
World-wide Birthplace Resource
World-wide Route and Port Resource
This CD unearths mariner-related occupations, business associations and
interim employment you hadn't thought about.
CD Hints from Voyage Patterns May Point to Other Research Resources
Coverage of Records by Database Type
CD Location Field Groups by Database and Record Type
Sample of Atlantic Canada Vessel Crewmembers Unique Birthplace and Surname
Distributions
Sample of Birthplace Statistics by Country, Region, County and Town
Italian Mariners Index
Every name index of Mariners born in Italy found on the Ships & Seafarer's of
Atlantic Canada CD Memorial University of Newfoundland with Last Name, First
Name, Born Circa Year and Birthplace, plus Database location on the CD is
available here as a zipped Word document

I have also abstracted lists of specific ports, mariner surnames, residences
and birthplaces for the states of Maine, Massachusetts and Louisiana for
columnists or newsletter writers in those regions. You are welcome to quote
any part of the article in another publication as long as you contact me in
advance. We may have updates for crossreference indices.
The greatest depth and corroborating information across all databases is in
the personal and business relationships for Atlantic Canada shipping
activities. However, the breadth of information is illustrated by the top ten
mariner birthplace locations which only represent about one-third of the
specified birthplaces: Liverpool, England; Sweden; Norway; London, England;
Germany; Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; Glasgow, Scotland; England; Finland; St John,
New Brunswick.
Another item of interest for ship list resources is the Boston States
Migration fair syllabus outline for the talk given by Henry Scannell Curator
of Microtext and Newspapers at the Boston Public Library:
