I agree that using lecture handouts standalone and out of context is of dubious
value. However it would be very beneficial to have the handouts available for a
fee to use along with the tapes available from Repeat Performance. I have
"attended" many lectures via these tapes and whenever possible I have purchased
the accompanying syllabus.
Most people are not able to attend every national conference and this is a way
of educating a broader spectrum of researchers. In my case, I have purchased
tapes of lectures presented several years before I started genealogy. While it
is possible to obtain reliable manuals for generic research topics (military
records, land records), there are no books available for many specialized and
regional topics.
