She's a junior in college. No doubt. She's writing for,
probably the journalism paper. I don't see why this is such
an issue. Ill worded or not, she's probably not even 21
years of age and has just declared her major (which, if all
of us remember, we didn't declare until our junior year
either). So, this is probably her first course assignment
in the subject.
She's a kid. A student. Not very sophisticated yet,
granted. But, let's not get all crazy about this. She's
just a college student looking for information. Living on a
diet of pizza and coke and worrying about much bigger things
like: next weekend-what am I going to do and who with? Will
this zit go away? Come on folks, let's put things into
perspective here. Let's not demand more from an age group
that will never live up to our elevated standards. They are
where we were many years ago. Remember?
I have several very bright, absolutely academically
superior, nieces who are absolute knuckleheads, space
cadets, when it comes to dealing with my generation. Their
time will come. Right now, I happen to enjoy their naivete
and their total mental abandon of "my logic." It doesn't
matter. They make me laugh uncontrollably. They are
hysterical in their lack of knowledge and lack of concern
for my concern. I have to remind myself what it was like to
be 19 years old. Oh boy. Is that a dangerous subject...
So, please. Let's put things into perspective. Blame it on
the professors it makes your feel better. The fact of the
matter is these kids are KIDS and they will be that way
until the real world hits them in the face. Let's not rush
that on them just yet. Let's just be good teachers if we
have the opportunity.
Best regards. Nancy.
