Subject: [APG] Tartan Day at Portland Conference

This is the first of a series of reminders to participants in the Portland
Conference that 18 May 2001 will be unofficial Tartan Day. That means the
kilts come out, the sashes, and the other stuff that makes those of proud to
be Scots (even if we do descend from English Quakers<G>).

Some of us have been thinking about such a day since the Raleigh Conference
way back when. Now is the time. Why is now the time you ask? Allow me to
share. Beau (if you don't know Beau, than you should) has a mother (don't we
all) who is a Scott (not all of us do, I don't except by marriage), but he
thought he couldn't join Clan Scott. Turns out Clan Scott will take just
about anyone with the thinnest connection to the name (dues are dues) and to
have a mother surnamed Scott is just about as strong a connection as you can
have (after all, we know who the mother is, but the father, that might be
another story). So I told Beau that if he bought a kilt, I would wear my
kilt (last seen at a National Conference in 1993 at FGS Richmond) and things
sort of got more grandiose (this is Craig, remember) so I obtained
permission from the power that be (he said, "Go for it"). So there you have
it.

Be there, be square, be sett, be tartan. 18 May 2001. Please spread the
word, tell your friends, tell your significants. Help us display a wee bit
of color (and then, how about later a wee dram).

For those who are unable to determine a Scots ancestry and do not know what
Tartan to where, please contact me and I will be happy to help you find a
tartan appropriate to you and yours, or make you an honorary member of Clan
Scott for the day (no dues).

Yours aye (as we say in the Scottish world),

C.
