I found the book, "The Information Broker's Handbook," by Sue Rugge and
Alfred Glossbrenner very helpful when I began planning a genealogy business
and I still refer to it quite often.
I read the first edition in my local library and have since bought the
third edition (McGraw-Hill, 1997). Information brokers research for
companies and answer questions such as, "Why do Maine potatoes cost such
and such and Idaho potatoes so much?"
Information brokers have many business problems similar to those of
genealogists such as finding the market, establishing customer confidence
in your business, networking, pricing, estimating a project, reports,
educating the client, tools and techniques, contracts, and more.
